HOW
CIVILIZED! SITUATION: As a summer project, you decide to
create a completely unique civilization. You are to present the new
civilization to your classmates to see if anyone would like to become a
part of it.
CHALLENGE: 1)
Explain:
Your first step
is to describe you civilization through writing and pictures.
Make sure you include the following: ·
Who are
you (the founder)? Why did you decide to create the new civilization? ·
How does
your geography affect your civilization? ·
What is
your staple crop? ·
What
types of food did you develop from your staple crop? ·
What does
your clothing look like? ·
How did
you build your shelter? ·
What
technologies did you invent to make your life easier? ·
Why did
other people join your civilization? ·
Describe
your new language. ·
What type
of government or social structure did you create?
Include some of your laws. ·
Describe
the economic system of your new civilization.
Include money and/or trade goods. ·
In what
types of arts and recreation do you participate? Make
sure you answer the “why questions.”
For example, why did you choose the trade goods that you did?
Of what material is your money made?
BE SPECIFIC! Your
final book can be written in the following formats: ·
Personal
journal written by the founder ·
Historical
account by an archeologist (textbook format) ·
Narrative
story
2) Create: Create
a circle book showing the features of your civilization.
Directions will be given in class.
3)
Provide: Give
evidence of the various components of your civilization through
artifacts. Your artifacts
should reflect at least four of the following: ·
Social structure/government ·
Culture: food/crops, shelter, clothing,
recreation (you may also choose to include religion and education) ·
Geography: landforms and climate, natural
resources ·
Economic system: Money? Trade? Other? ·
Language/form of communication ·
Technological developments that have made
your life easier Suggested
formats for the evidence: Postcards or photographs Articles of food or clothing Maps Pamphlets or brochures Models Written journal explanations 4) Persuade: In a presentation,
use your artifacts to convince your classmates to visit or join your
civilization. Class
time will be given each day to work on the project, but you may need to
spend extra time at home developing your ideas and creating the final
touches.
