Weslandia Civilization Book & Artifacts Presentation

HOW CIVILIZED!

SITUATION: As a summer project, you decide to create a completely unique civilization. You are to present the new civilization to your classmates to see if anyone would like to become a part of it.

CHALLENGE:

1)   Explain: Your first step is to describe you civilization through writing and pictures.  Make sure you include the following:

·       Who are you (the founder)? Why did you decide to create the new civilization?

·       How does your geography affect your civilization?

·       What is your staple crop?

·       What types of food did you develop from your staple crop?

·       What does your clothing look like?

·       How did you build your shelter?

·       What technologies did you invent to make your life easier?

·       Why did other people join your civilization?

·       Describe your new language.

·       What type of government or social structure did you create?  Include some of your laws.

·       Describe the economic system of your new civilization.  Include money and/or trade goods.

·       In what types of arts and recreation do you participate?

Make sure you answer the “why questions.”  For example, why did you choose the trade goods that you did?  Of what material is your money made?  BE SPECIFIC!

Your final book can be written in the following formats:

·        Personal journal written by the founder

·        Historical account by an archeologist (textbook format)

·        Narrative story

2) Create: Create a circle book showing the features of your civilization.  Directions will be given in class.

3) Provide: Give evidence of the various components of your civilization through artifacts.  Your artifacts should reflect at least four of the following:

·       Social structure/government

·       Culture: food/crops, shelter, clothing, recreation (you may also choose to include religion and education)

·       Geography: landforms and climate, natural resources

·       Economic system: Money? Trade? Other?

·       Language/form of communication

·       Technological developments that have made your life easier

Suggested formats for the evidence:

Postcards or photographs

Articles of food or clothing

Maps

Pamphlets or brochures

Models

Written journal explanations

4) Persuade: In a presentation, use your artifacts to convince your classmates to visit or join your civilization.

Class time will be given each day to work on the project, but you may need to spend extra time at home developing your ideas and creating the final touches. Be creative and have fun combining your imagination with all you have learned this year!
